Savannah: Days 7 and 8

Yesterday, we all enjoyed our last day in Savannah, just hanging out together. We all got up and went to downtown Savannah and River Street, and then ate at Paula Dean’s Resturant! After shopping, we all went back to the church. At the church, we all just napped or read or just hung out! At around 7, we all went to IHOP for supper! After supper, we headed back to the church, where we went around and said our favorite thing about the trip, a thing we realized we needed to work on and a thing we like about ourselves. After that, we had our Dirty Santa! We had so much fun stealing each other’s gifts! After gifts, we all watched a movie, and wrote notes to each other (which we can’t read until we get home), and then we had another one of our life talks until 2 in the morning! It was fun learning more about each other, and everyone was sad it was our last night! This morning, we all got up at six, packed up the car, got ready, and cleaned up the rooms we stayed in. Now, we are on the way back to Auburn! This trip was nothing short of amazing. While it was hard, mentally and physically, it was totally worth it in the end. I encourage everyone to participate in ASB. It was truly a life changing experience, and we all hate to see it end! Thanks for reading 🙂

Savannah: Day 6, Last Day

Today was our last day to volunteer 😦 Our day started off with going to the Ruth Byck center at 10 a.m. When we got there, we all visited with the clients until about 10:30, and then there was a dance therapist come! She stayed doing dance therapy until 12:00, and then they started to serve lunch there. Us volunteers packed our own lunches, and went out in front of the center in the concourse and ate! At 12:45, we went back inside and performed our dance for the clients! It was so much fun to dance for them, and the clients seemed to really like it! After our dance, we played Christmas Jingo (bingo) with the clients! The winners of the game even got awesome prizes! After jingo, the center had an ice cream party for us since it was our last day! We thought that was so sweet of them! The clients got ice cream too! After ice cream, we had to leave 😦 we were all super bummed that we had to leave, but we were all excited that we completed a full week of volunteering and we felt like we really made a difference in the senior citizens lives! After leaving Ruth Byck, we came back to the church, and we all just hung out or took naps! At around six, we all started getting ready to head out to go eat dinner at Tubby’s. It was a seafood place, and it was good! We had so much fun getting to go out to eat! When we got back to the church, we all just hung out and watched movies or played spades! Now, were all about to get a good nights sleep because we have a busy day tomorrow! Keep reading to find out about our last day in Savannah tomorrow 🙂

Savannah: Day 6, Last Day

Savannah: Day 5

Today was a good day for all of us here in Savannah! Our day started off by leaving the church at 845 to head to Port Wentworth. At Port Wentworth, we helped give out cookies to the local cops and firefighters. We also played card games and visited with the clients! Some of us were taught how to play hand and foot by a few women at the center! The game was a little confusing at first, but we all got the hang of it! At around 1130, we had to leave. We were all super sad because it was the last time we will go there, and we all just love all the people there! At 12, we arrived at our next stop, Thunderbolt. At Thunderbolt, we were given lunch! After lunch, we got to just relax and visit with clients! Some of us just talked, some of us gave manicures and others learned a new game! We were all really sad to leave there today, because, like Port Wentworth, we won’t be going back there! After leaving Thunderbolt, we went to deliver shelf stable meals again! After all the deliveries were made, we headed back to the church! Then, some of us went to shower and some went to Walmart! Then we all came back to the church and just relaxed until dinner time! We had jambalaya, prepared by our site leader and advisor! After dinner, we did our highs and lows. Most everyones’ low was that they were sad about not going back to the two centers anymore! But, the highs were that we got to spend time and get to know such wonderful people! Tomorrow, we will be spending our whole day at the Ruth Byck center, and we have decided to do a little skit for them in the morning! So, we will be lip syncing and dancing to Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas. So, we practiced for that after our high and lows! Now, some are playing cards, while the rest of us are just gonna go to sleep! More to come! Keep reading 🙂

Savannah: Day 5

Savannah: Day 4

Our day started off with some getting up at 630 to head to the Y to shower and some staying here to sleep until 8! At 915, we all left and headed out to Port Wentworth. At Port Wentworth, we baked cookies, visited with the clients, made ornaments and participated in the cakewalk! Two of our members even won cakes! We made tons of cookies to give to the local police officers and firemen! Then, the center gave us lunch! After lunch, we packed up to head to the Ruth Byck center. When we arrived there, we made holiday cards with the citizens there! Then, they had a woman come and play the piano while all of us sang Christmas songs! After Christmas songs, we sat around for a little while longer talking to the clients. After leaving the center, we walked to Senior Headquarters, Inc. for their open house. After staying there for a little bit, we came back to the church. When we got back, some of us went to shower and the others stayed here! After showers, we all came back to the church and took naps. After naps, two of the members of our group cooked us supper! After supper, we all talked about our high and lows! Once again, all in all, we all had a good day! After highs and lows, we played taboo! We all had so much fun playing, and laughed so much at everyone trying to describe the words! After our game ended, we all came upstairs and got ready for bed! Now we are, once again, having a group discussion about life! I don’t think you could get a closer group than ours! There’s not anything we don’t feel comfortable with discussing! It’s really incredible! Continue following to find out more 🙂

Savannah: Day 4

Savannah: Day 3

Today was such an enjoyable day! We started off our day at Thunderbolt Daycare Center, where half of us went to the mall with some of the senior citizens, and the other half stayed at the center to make some arts and crafts with the senior citizens that didn’t want to go to the mall. At the mall, we all just walked around with the senior citizens and helped them shop for whatever they were going for! We all had so much fun at the mall helping them shop! The elderly that we got to interact with were so funny and so interesting! The others that got to stay at the center also had so much fun! They got to do arts and crafts and just talk and hang out with the people there! We were all very upset that we had to leave! After we left Thunderbolt, we went to the Ruth Bick Daycare Center, which is the place we went to yesterday as well. We also had a great time there! They had a dance instructor come to have a dance class! Not only did the senior citizens there have a good time dancing, us volunteers did too! We enjoyed getting to dance with the elderly! After dance class was over, another woman came and we had a music class. We all got instruments and played them and sang Christmas music! After the music class was over, we came back to the church. Half of us went to shower and the other half went to Walmart. Then we all went to the movies! Half of us went to see New Year’s Eve and the other half went to Breaking Dawn, Part 1! After seeing our movie, we came back to the church, and two of the volunteers cooked us spaghetti. After a wonderful dinner, all of us went over our high and lows of the day! We all agreed that overall, the whole day was a high! After our highs and lows, we all came up and got ready to go to sleep. However, were all having a discussion on life! It’s amazing how personal everyone is already getting and how comfortable we all are with each other! We are all having no problems just opening up to each other and talking about everything! It’s awesome! Keep reading to find out more about our amazing week here in Savannah! 🙂

Savannah: Day 3

Savannah: Day 2

Our first day volunteering was a huge success! We all woke up and went to bathe at the Y, which was an experience! Then we got to go to Seniors, Inc. headquarters for our orientation and then we went to deliver meals! We split into two cars and some went to deliver hot meals and some went to deliver “emergency meals.” we all had such a good time driving around to deliver the meals! It felt so great to be able to get those meals to them, because in some cases, that’s the only good meal they get a day. After delivering, we all met up for lunch, where we had a discussion about sororities/fraternities and religion! After lunch, we walked to the daycare center and did arts and crafts with the senior citizens! We all had so much fun getting to know them! They were all so happy that we were there. Both the senior citizens and us kids were dancing, laughing, talking and just having an amazing time! After leaving the day care center, we all went on a tour of savannah with a member of the church, from where we are staying, as our tour guide! He took us around downtown and through the city, and then we went out to see his friend’s property. His friend had a gorgeous place with a lake behind it. Interestingly, the lake connects to the ocean, and sometimes, they can see dolphins in there! After our tour, we came here to decide what to do next. Since we were all starving, we decided to go get food and then make a quick Walmart trip! After getting “lost” and driving around for about an hour, we finally found a Walmart and an applebees! After a rather interesting two hours at applebees, we finally got to come back to the church! When we got back, we all went around and said our high and lows of the days. We all had different highs and lows, but mostly, everyone agreed that the whole day was a high. Just getting to spend time with the senior citizens made everyones day, and we can’t wait to go back! Were also all excited to go to a new place in the morning and meet some new people. We’ve all agreed that already this trip feels like it has been longer than 2 days, but in a good way. Everyone is already so comfortable with each other and we all laugh so much when were together. Despite all of our different personalities, somehow we all click perfectly. I couldn’t ask for a better group or better people! Were all looking forward to another fun filled day tomorrow!

Savannah: Day 2

Savannah: Day 1

Our first day was a success! Were all getting to know more about each other and we already have many inside jokes! After getting on the road, we stopped to eat lunch at cracker barrel! We got to know both of our waiters and alot of fun! We had a debate over whole vs. Skim milk, and apparently our waiter likes thumbs up too  after finally getting to the church and unpacking, we made a walmart trip to get groceries for the week and then we came back here! Two of the girls, Rachel and Marissa, made us dinner. Turkey burgers and macaroni. Yum! While they prepared dinner, the rest of us just hung out, talking, playing cards and learning how to dance! After dinner, we all decorated our own paper bag. During the week, we can all write each other notes and put them in that person’s bag. However, no one can open their bag and read the notes until they get home! After doing our bags, we all just hung out, doing a few workouts and dancing, and then we played the two truths and a lie game to get to know each other better! Us girls are all in a room, and then the boys are in a room! All of us girls told ghost stories, and now were all ready to get some sleep for our day tomorrow! More to come!
